Why white marble yellows — and how to prevent it

Yellowing is almost never the stone's fault. The three real culprits, and the fixes.

The first culprit is oil — ghee diyas placed against the stone, oily hands during pooja, and oil-based cleaners. Oil soaks into marble's pores and oxidises yellow. Keep diyas on a plate a hand's width away, and never "polish" marble with oil.

The second is soot: incense and diya smoke deposit a film that turns ivory over months. A weekly dry wipe removes it before it bonds. The third is harsh cleaners — acids etch the polish and the rough surface then traps dirt, which reads as yellowing.

Already yellowed? Don't try bleach. A professional re-polish removes a hair's breadth of surface and restores the original white — we offer this at the workshop. The full do's and don'ts are in our care guide.
